BABY SAFETY BASICS

To protect a baby from accidents, be sure to follow all of these safety tpis all the time:

1. Never smoke near the baby, whether you're in the house or outdoors.

2. Keep your eyes on him/her at all times (unless he's/she's napping).

3. Keep your eyes and a hand on the baby when he's/she's on a high surface. That means on a changing table, bed, chair or couch. Even newborns who can't roll over can suddenly stretch and fall off.

4. Never put the baby in an infant (or car) seat or carrier on the table, counter or any raised surface. A strong kick could send the seat and baby to the ground.

5. If there are safety straps on the changing table, use them. But don't rely on them to keep the baby secure. You still need to keep a constant eye on him and a hand too, if he's/she's squirmy.

6. Never jiggle or shake the baby (even in play) or toss him up in the air. Babies can suffer permanent damage and even die from what is called shaken baby syndrome.

7. To Prevent accidental strangulation, don't attach a chain or string longer than six inches to the baby's clothing, toys or other belongings. Make sure that the ends og strings in hoods, gowns and pants are knotted so that can't slip through, and never leave cords, string, ropes or necklaces of any kind around where baby might get to them.

8. Make sure the baby's crib, play yard and changing table are not within reach of electric cords, telephone cords, or blind or drapery cords. All these items can strangle a baby.

9. To prevent accidental suffocation, don't leave filmy plastics, such as those used by dry cleaners, where the baby can get them.

10. Don't leave an infant within reach of pillows, stuffed animals or other plush items.

11. Always put the baby to sleep on his/her back, whether it's for a short nap or at bedtime.

12. Don't let the baby sleep with pillows, comforters or stuffed toys or on a sheepskin, plush top mattress, beanbags, or waterbed. And never let the baby sleep on a bed wedged up against the wall.

13. Don't place the baby anywhere near an unguarded window, even for a second, and even if he's/she's sound asleep.

14. Never go out, even for a moment, without the baby. It may be tempting to leave him/her asleep while you run to the mailbox or check the laundry in the apartment basement. Don't. A Fire or an accident can happen in second.

15. Never leave the baby alone in a room with a pet, even a very well behaved one.

16. Never leave the baby alone in a room with a child under five years old. A loving but overenthusiastic bear hug could crack a rib, and even a peekaboo game between a preschooler and an infant could result in tragic suffocation.

17. Always strap an infant into a rear facing infant car seat or a rear facing convertible of a car. Follow all the parents' instructions on car seat use.

18. Never leave a child alone in a car. Even if you just have to run into the dry cleaner's, take him/her with you. Being left alone in a car in warm weather is especially dangerous.

MEMILIH PENGASUH ANAK YANG BAIK DAN TEPAT

Pengasuh anak adalah penganti sementara orang tua yang sedang sibuk atau bekerja, oleh sebab itu kita harus cermat dalam memilih pengasuh anak, sebab di jaman saat ini kita sangat “asing” kepada siapa anak kita di jaga. Berikut Yayasan Karya Bangsa (YKB) membantu menberikan tips untuk memilih pengasuH anak yang tepat.
Tips untuk memilih pengasuh yang tepat untuk anak :
1. Tentukan kapan kita membutuhkan pengasuh serta pengalaman seperti apa yang kita cari dari pengasuh anak.
2. Tentukan tingkat upah dan fasilitas yang ingin kita berikan kepada pengasuh. Misalnya makan dan tempat tinggal.
3. Cari daftar tempat yang menyediakan jasa pengasuh anak.
Tempat-tempat tersebut biasanya memiliki daftar pengasuh yang berkualitas dengan latar belakang yang bersih, mengesankan, memiliki pendidikan dan pengetahuan tentang anak, dan pengalaman. Periksa dengan teliti sebelum memutuskan menggunakan jasa dari tempat penyediaan pengasuh.
4. Kita juga bisa memeriksa melalui searching internet untuk review dari tempat yang menyediakan jasa pengasuh
5. Tanyakan teman dan tetangga tentang pengasuh atau perusaahan yang menyediakan jasa pengasuh yang mereka rekomendasikan.
6. Lakukan pemeriksaan latar belakang secara menyeluruh terhadap semua calon pengasuh.
Periksa mulai dari kondisi kesehatan, latar belakang kriminal, dokumen yang di miliki, pengalaman kerja sebelumnya, atau kejadian masa lalu yang mungkin akan memengaruhi pilihan Anda.
7. Buatlah daftar pertanyaan yang akan ditanyakan untuk masing-masing calon pengasuh selama proses wawancara.
Pertanyaan-pertanyaan tersebut meliputi metode disiplin mereka, rutinitas sehari-hari, metode diet atau makanan yang mereka pilih untuk anak, dan apa yang akan mereka lakukan saat senggang.
8. Buatlah perjanjian tertulis antara kita dengan pengasuh setelah memilih calon pengasuh yang sesuai dengan keinginan kita.
Perjanjian tersebut harus mencakup segala sesuatu yang akan dilakukan oleh pengasuh, seperti mencuci pakaian anak, memandikan anak, dan tanggung jawab pengasuh lainnya, tak lupa pula kesepakan mengenai gaji untuk pengasuh.
Pastikan perjanjian tersebut ditandatangai oleh kita dan pengasuh

KEEP THE GERMS AWAY

Germs are everywhere but that does not mean you have to let them get the upper hand.

1. WASH UP
Remind the child to wash his/her hands when coming in from outside, before and after eating, and after going to bathroom or blowing his/her nose. Make sure you wash along with the child and remember to wash up after a diaper change and before you pick up newborn.

Tips: happy hand washing

Kids are famous for two second hand wash. (half the time, their hands don't even get wet). To make hand washing fun and more effective have the child sing a favourite tune. Once the song's over, he/she can stop washing.

2. BE PREPARED
Carry wipes (and antibacterial hand gel) with you for quick cleanup when there's no soap and water.

3. COVER UP
Remind kids to turn their heads when they cough or sneeze, and to use a tissiue to wipe their nose.

4. KEEP PUDDLES OFF LIMITS
Though they're a blast to jump in, they're also full of germs, so keep those little hands out of that dirty water.

5. KEEP WELL CHILDREN AWAY FROM SICK CHILDREN
If there's one thing that children are good at sharing, it is germs.

6. KEEP TOYS CLEAN
Wash toys that other children have mouthed.

Symptoms of Diarrhea

Symptoms of Diarrhea include loose, watery bowel movements and sometimes stomachache. Vomiting can also make the stomach hurt. To help:

1. Push Fluids.
A Child who has diarrhea or vomiting is losing a lot of fluids that need to be replaced. So keep those drinks coming (water is the best, milk or juice). If the Child throws up the liquids, continiue giving small amounts every 15 minutes, since some liquids is bound to stay down.

2. Don't Push Food.
Let's the Child's tummy be your guide at mealtime. If he's/she's hungry, serve very bland foods (toast, white rice, bananas). If not, don't try to force feed.
